Abstract :
Current paper introduces a novel structure for power system stabilizer (PSS) using mixed of proportionalintegral-differential (PID) controller and IEEE type PSS2B. Proposed PID-PSS2B is designed in coordination with thyristor controlled series capacitor (TCSC)-based power oscillation damping (POD) controller to enhance power system small-signal stability. Although the coordinated design of conventional CPSS-POD controller improves power system damping characteristics, applying practical advanced stabilizer of PID-PSS2B in coordination with the POD controller, for the first time, can contribute more effectively in damping of low frequency oscillations (LFOs). The design problem is formulated as an optimization problem in which the controller parameters are tuned concurrently via improved particle swarm optimization (IPSO) algorithm by minimizing integral of time squared error (ITSE) performance index. Time domain simulations in MATLAB/SIMULINK environment performed on 2-area 4-machine (2A4M) power system over various perturbations reveal that superior enhancement in damping of LFOs is achieved by employing coordinated controllers of PID-PSS2B and POD in comparison with the CPSS-POD.
