Abstract
A level European countries, Italy counts with the higher number of smart meters deployment in its net electricity. Nowadays, ENEL, Italy´s largest electric utility has installed 40 million smart meters based on PLC with an innovative remote management system called Telegestore. Smart metering based on PLC is the natural backbone and the first step toward Smart Grid. Nevertheless, the technology is constantly evolving and today there is a new IEEE 1901.2 standard on narrow-band Power Line Communications that define a new generation of PLC based on OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex) and provides higher communication bandwidth compared to those installed 12 years ago by ENEL. This paper shows the structure in both lower and higher layers of the Telegestore System evolved according ISO model. In addition, the performances of Physical Layers in both Meters & More (Telegestore System evolved) and IEEE 1901.2 specifications are compared to each other by theoretical analysis.
