Abstract
Special Protection System (SPS) detects one or more predetermined system condition that may cause unusual stress to the power system and for those conditions it will take the predefined corrective actions to maintain the stability of the system. The failure of the system to identify the defined condition or its failure to take the predefined remedial action, could lead to severe consequences. In order to increase the transfer capability of the power network SPS is widely used since it help the power system operators in performing fast remedial actions. The purpose of this paper is to study the reliability assessment of SPS implemented at Kolar HVDC station, using Markov modeling and Fault tree analysis methods.
