Abstract
This paper presents a non-photorealistic rendering algorithm for Pointillism style. At first, ellipse dots are adopted as rendering elements and their locations are randomly distributed on a target image. Then dots orientations are pre-calculated with guidance of a direction map. A saliency map of the source image decides long and short radius of the ellipse dot. At last, the dots render the canvas image layer-by-layer from large to small dots according to their directions. The proposed method not only reserves the classic Pointillism style, but also enhances the detailed parts of the source image.
