Abstract :
Random access is being considered as one of the key bottlenecks for supporting machine-to-machine (M2M) communications over an IEEE 802.16-based WiMAX network. This paper presents a comprehensive analytical model to evaluate the performance of the WiMAX CDMA-based random access (CRA) procedure under the bursty M2M communications traffic in the Smart Grid. Compared to the literature, the proposed model incorporates the unique features of the CRA procedure such as multi-user multi-code transmission and parallel code detection in the performance analysis matrix. The accuracy of the model is validated by an extensive set of simulation results based on an OPNET simulation model. The results provide some interesting insights into the performance of the WiMAX random access plane for a range of controllable parameters, such as the number of available codes, the number of detectable codes, and the backoff parameters.
