Abstract
In the past decade or so, we have witnessed an explosive growth in the use of convex optimization techniques to tackle problems in signal processing and communications. By drawing from the rich theory of and versatile algorithmic tools for convex optimization, researchers have been able to not only refine and improve old designs, but also come up with new, sophisticated designs and develop efficient algorithms for implementing them. In this tutorial, we will first cover the basics of convex optimization from problem formulation to theory to algorithms. Then, we will demonstrate how techniques from convex optimization offer design insights and efficient solution methods for some of the latest signal processing applications, such as transmit beamforming and sensor network localization.
