Abstract :
A Position regulated Speed Control device (PSC) derived from a current automatic speed control device, reduces the tasks of drivers in highway driving and is expected highly effective in preventing rear-end collisions. The PSC can recognize the preceding vehicle on the same lane, and control vehicle speed in order to maintain the predetermined distance between vehicles. The scanning laser sensor, which pans a slit laser beam from side to side, is used to detect the distance between vehicles. It can distinguish the preceding vehicle on the same lane from the next lane on curves. The PSC controller infers how much speed is needed to maintain the predetermined distance based on the inputs from sensors such as the scanning laser sensor and a vehicle speed sensor. It operates the throttle, the gearbox and the brake according to the inferred speed value. If a slower vehicle appears ahead, the PSC vehicle is decelerated by braking and down-shifting, and thereafter follows at the speed of the preceding vehicle. Moreover, if another vehicle cuts in, the PSC makes the vehicle speed slow down quickly as well as warning the driver. Thereafter, it controls vehicle speed to keep the predetermined distance.
