Abstract :
It is noted that the public switched fractional DS1 service capability (SWIFT-DS1) will give customers the ability to establish calls with other customers at rates between 64 kbps and 1.536 Mbps, in increments of 64 kbps, on a real-time basis. Since it is a circuit switched service, it is ideally suited to supporting applications that have stringent delay requirements, such as videoconferencing SWIFT-DS1 can be offered from both a non-ISDN (integrated services digital network) platform, using a conventional touchtone telephone for call set up and tear down, or a primary rate access (PRA) ISDN platform. The authors focus on the PRA ISDN version of SWIFT-DS1. They describe applications that could benefit from a SWIFT-DS1 capability. They also discuss basic call control procedures and modifications in the network that are needed to support SWIFT-DS1
