Abstract
It is noted that video services may be provided over twisted wire pairs provided that the digital video is sufficiently compressed and provided that the bit rate achieved on copper is sufficiently high. Recent advances in digital video coding have resulted in an international standard for video coding at about 1.5 Mb/s with quality sufficient for many business and residential services. It is further noted that advances in transmission technology offer the possibility of megabit and higher bit rates over a single wire pair. Together these advances can be used to provide video services over existing telephone interoffice facilities and distribution loop plants
