Abstract
ITS R&D Center, Jilin University of Technology is undertaking an ITS technology project, Theory and Method of Urban Traffic Flow Guidance Systems. The project aims to improve the safety and efficiency of automobile travel. As a part of it, we developed a Trip Guidance System (TGS) based on the rapidly expanding Internet network. The scheme consists of a pretrip planning system which enables travelers to make a plan available at any terminal that is connected to the Internet; and an in-vehicle navigation system which provides traffic information and en-route advisory services. This paper presents some of our initial findings. It begins with a discussion of the unique functions of the Internet, which are robust enough to meet the needs of route guidance systems. It also presents an overall system structure, and highlights the critical considerations when implementing such services, that is, when using Internet-based technology. Finally, it concludes with a discussion of potential problems areas for future research
