Abstract
The authors explore the role of information technology (IT) with respect to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9000 series of documentation. ISO certification, implementation, and benefits are examined. The new ISO standard for developing and maintaining software is outlined. In particular, attention is given to whether ISO 9000 is to be viewed as a problem of compliance or as an opportunity for IT in shaping the future of organizations in a global marketplace. Two surveys are reviewed and diverse views of the IT role are highlighted
