Abstract
The paper describes the application of variable structure techniques to the synthesis of a longitudinal autopilot for a missile performing a heading reversal maneuver, which requires angles of attack greater than 90 degrees. In this region, the system dynamics are nonlinear and highly uncertain due to the variation of aerodynamic coefficients. The control gains designed for a point flight condition do not require scheduling and the controller structure is implemented using a blending of aerodynamic, reaction jets and main engine actuation
