Abstract
A prior study by the authors on management information systems (MISs) is updated to include development in the 1980s. It is found that MIS continues to emerge from the foundations of these reference disciplines, i.e., computer science, management science, and organization science. The MIS literature in the core journals approximately doubled from the first half of the decade to the second. The relationship of MIS to the foundational field of organization science remains an issue, as research published in MIS journals is little referenced in the core journals of organization science. A closer relationship between these two fields is predicted to develop during the 1990s
