Abstract :
The joint statistics of the random gain and random buildup time in ultrafast avalanche photodiodes is determined for the first time. It is shown that the strong correlation present adversely affects intersymbol-interference noise and receiver sensitivity at high transmission rates well beyond previously-known limits.
