Abstract
AUDETEL is a system for transmitting a spoke AUdio DEscription of the TELevision picture for visually impaired people, within the standard television channel, but separately from the normal television sound. This paper gives an overview of the work carried out to solve one of the technical problems-how to transmit an additional speech signal within the existing television channel. The development of a digital speech coding and transmission system, using the television vertical blanking interval (or optionally spare capacity in the NICAM multiplex), has been one of the achievements of the project
