Abstract :
This paper reviews the status of the main issues pertaining to the reliability of optical fibre cables and shows how increasing understanding of those issues is supporting the evolution of optical cable designs. Six types of failure mode, their effects and causes are discussed, and innovative cable designs are compared with conventional ones
