Abstract :
This paper presents a wavelength reservation approach in optical packet switched (OPS) networks for increasing the throughput of the network significantly and thereby placing the calls in a most efficient, manner. In this paper, we propose an intro-class contention resolution scheme that reduces the blocking probability of higher quality of service (QoS) level calls to almost zero and provides best effort for the lower QoS level calls. The delay incurred for higher QoS level calls is also reduced. Thus the network can be made to work in a most effective way by using this technique. Analysis of the proposed strategy shows that significant improvement in blocking performance can be achieved by providing wavelength reservation within the optical packet switch. This guarantees support for the highest priority traffic while providing best effort transport for the lower priority levels. The jitter effects have been neglected.
