Abstract
Optimum digital transmission through channels with intersymbol interference is achieved by maximum likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) equalization. This requires knowledge of the channel impulse response. The effect of imperfect channel measurements on the performance of the data transmission is considered. Channel estimates are obtained by correlation or by a least-squares procedure. The error probability is averaged with respect to the statistical distribution of the estimates
