Abstract :
The British Standard BS5958 entitled `Control of Undesirable Static Electricity´ was published in 1991. Part I deals with the basic aspects of charge generation and the retention of undesirable static electricity in solids, liquids and gases and also on people. Part II deals with the generation of static electricity in particular situations during the handling of different types of materials which includes liquids, powders, gases, sprays, explosives and electro-explosive devices. Several examples are given to illustrate both the basic principles of charge accumulation in particular industrial situations and incidents. The ways are discussed in which as assessment of minimum ignition energy (MIE) can be made
