Abstract :
The effectiveness of priority schemes of the DQDB (distributed-queue dual-bus) and the FDDI (fiber distributed data interface) is evaluated. The DQDB offers three levels of priority by the use of three request bits and the FDDI provides eight levels of priority by the timed token rotation protocol. Simulation results show that both the DQDB and the FDDI can provide satisfactory priority transmission service. It is also shown that the DQDB is more favorable than the FDDI in terms of data throughput, while the FDDI has little advantage over the DQDB for transmission of low priority data in terms of transmission delay time
