Abstract
`Open´ GUIs, such as IBM CUA, OSF/Motif and Macintosh are definitions of UI presentation and interaction techniques, and some guidance is given on the sorts of task for which the techniques are or are not appropriate. The application designer´s task is to find or invent expressions of the domain (e.g. `network management´) within the constraints and conventions of the GUI style appropriate for the platform where the application will be used. GUIs are `good´ when the tasks in the target domain can be fully and appropriately supported by presentation and interaction techniques defined in the GUI
