Abstract :
Based on complex variable method, this work studies the two dimensional problem of a sharp elliptic hole/crack in an infinite soft ferromagnetic medium which is subjected to the remote magnetic loads. Emphasis is placed on the investigation of the effects of the applied magnetic loads on stress concentration around the elliptical hole and the intensity factor of stress, k, when the hole degenerates a crack. According to the magnetically permeable model, the results for T¿ at the rim of the hole and k at the tip of the crack are first obtained in closed-form, and then some numerical examples are presented to discuss the effects of the applied loads on T¿ and k. It is shown that the crack growth is related to the medium inside the crack and the Maxwell stress induced along the crack surface.
