  • Abstract
This work addresses a comparative analysis on the planar traction force in two planar actuators. The first device is a Brushless DC Planar Actuator, i.e. DCPA, which is composed of a ferromagnetic core, a set of two orthogonal planar windings, and a mover fitted with permanent magnets that produce the magnetic field excitation. The movement of the mover over the working plan occurs when the coils of the windings are excited with DC current. The second is an Induction Planar Actuator, i.e. IPA, formed by a static ferromagnetic core with an aluminium plate that corresponds to the secondary, and a mover, also called primary; the latter comprehends two three-phase windings which are orthogonal to each other. When they are fed by a three-phase AC excitation, a moving magnetic field takes place, and can travel along the x-axis and the y-axis direction simultaneously. In the both devices the planar traction force is function of constructive topology and voltage excitation (DC or AC) that will be presented and analysed with their individual characteristics; the conclusion of the paper makes a comparative analysis between the two actuators with respect the planar force and applications.
