Abstract
The problems associated with delivering voice calls to portable telephones away from a home (the service area where the user initially subscribed) are discussed. A description is given as to how the local exchange networks, with their intelligent network capabilities, can be used to solve these problems. It is shown that the necessary functions of registration, routing, alerting, and pickup can be implemented by making use of dedicated personal communication system (PCS) equipment, while capitalizing on the utility of: the switching fabric and generic switching features of the central office switching system; the Common Channel Signaling network with the SS7 protocol; and existing and emerging intelligent network capabilities
