  • Abstract
GIS and GIL are applied since several decades and proved to be very reliable and safe components of the power supply system. Extensive fundamental research was necessary for the development of the technology. Out of countless problems three are chosen to demonstrate the numerous phenomena, which had to be investigated. These are the flashover to ground during disconnector operation, the puncture of metal enclosures in case of severe internal arcs due to major faults and specific problems of N2/SF6 insulated systems for GIL. It is shown that such problems could often only be solved by means of simulation models, which are presented for complex discharge processes.
