Abstract :
To avoid exacerbating the environmental problem of global warming, SF6/N2 gas mixtures are increasingly being used as substitutes to pure SF6 in high voltage apparatus. This paper investigates the partial discharge behaviour of such gas mixtures, caused by the presence of a metallic protrusion near the spacer. Different ratios of these two gases at standard atmospheric pressure are tested under ac electric stress and the phase-resolved discharge patterns are compared. The proximity effect of the protrusion in relation to the spacer is considered.
