Abstract :
Future personal communication systems (PCS) might involve a synergy of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite and cellular radio technologies. For speech transmission, they will have to meet certain operational criteria to be qualitatively and economically viable. One of the most important of these is robustness to channel errors. The paper presents a case for the adoption of Reed-Solomon codes for FEC in future PCS.<>
