Abstract :
Each of the techniques are applied to the same magnetic resonance image and the results obtained are in terms of compression ratio and RMS error between the original and decompressed images. Techniques investigated cover both lossless and lossy coding and include runlength encoding, linearised quadtree encoding, LZW, Huffman encoding and DCT coding. In terms of compression ratio the best method was DCT, however the RMS error produced by this method can be large
