Abstract :
A smart space, i.e. a physical environment such as a laboratory or a home that can offer automatic services mainly relies on sensing devices to acquire contextual information, and on actuation devices to carry out context-aware responses. To deal with the great heterogeneity of these sensing and actuation devices with various hardware and software, this study is focused on the development of a general middleware called GUPSS (gateway-based ubiquitous platform for smart spaces) . It consists of multiple scalable SSGs (smart space gateways) that act as bridges between various devices and applications, and one SSS (smart space server) that administer these SSGs, the whole system, as well as the applications. GUPSS is designed and implemented using a service-oriented architecture with seven basic service modules: communication service, discovery service, management service, sensing service, storage service, actuation service, and interface service. The GUPSS can be applied to develop two kinds of applications, SSAe (smart space application embedded in SSS) and SSAw (smart space application Web-based for remote access). We developed the whole experimental system built with GUPSS and SunSPOT wireless devices as SSGs, which demonstrates as a representative in making smart space application.
