Abstract :
A hierarchical and modular local asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switch is proposed. In order to improve queuing performance, the output queuing technique is adopted and several outputs are allowed to partially share the same output buffer space. The performance of the proposed switch is evaluated under uniform and nonuniform traffic patterns. Comparisons with the knockout switch, the recursive switch, and the Christmas tree switch show that, in terms of complexity, crosstalk, scalability, and synchronization, the proposed switch is superior
