Abstract
Closed-form reliability functions for the dual homing configuration for the fiber distributed data interface (FDDI) are derived by the combinatorial method. The new reliability functions are then compared to that of the dual ring configuration via numerical examples, which show that in most cases the dual homing network is more reliable than the dual ring network. The model analysis also shows that dual homing is recommended only if certain network parameter constraints are met
