Abstract :
Two different types of repeaterless system design using optical amplifiers are described. One is a system using a high-power transmitter and a low-noise receiver. The other is a system using a remotely pumped optical amplifier. The system configurations, the high-power signal handling capacities of conventional fiber and dispersion-shifted fiber, and the properties of Er-doped fibre amplifiers (EDFA) and Raman amplifiers are described. Also, suppression methods for fiber nonlinearities are presented. Finally, 620 Mb/s transmission experiments were demonstrated over a 301 km fiber using EDFA and Raman amplifiers and over a 375 km fiber using remotely pumped optical amplifiers
