Abstract
Services that might be well suited for asynchronous transfer mode (ATM)-based networks are considered. The main focus is upon video services, since they are regarded as having a chance to become a mass service in ATM networks. The notion of a dominant service, i.e., a service determining the size and main characteristics of a network and leading to economies of scale is introduced. Video-telephony may become such a dominant service for ATM networks, preferably with a variable-bit-rate coding scheme to be standardized
