Abstract
Examining the high-technology business environment revealed uncertainty and change. Technological change was presented within a historical framework using economic long wave theory and the “paradigms of automation” that fuelled economic expansion. This framework highlights the long-term presence of technological change within the modern era of management. Against this historical record of technological change, the principles of modern management from Fayol (1916) present a framework to examine the difference between general management and the management of the technical function. Implications for the management of the technology driven firm are considered
