Abstract :
The molecular behavior of mechanically activated ionic channels is compared with the cellular behavior of stretch receptor neurons. Both systems have a pulse-code-modulated output and both can be modeled, to a degree, as leaky integrators. The model states that stretch, represented by m(t) along with a random function x(t ), is integrated by the closed 1 state of the channel. The interval between bursts is determined by threshold, T. Thus the channel transduces stretch through a closed state and encodes it through an open state
