  • Abstract
The electroluminescence characteristics of a mixture of gaseous xenon with the lighter noble gas neon are investigated as a function of the reduced electric field and composition of the mixture, using a Monte Carlo simulation model for the drift of electrons in the medium. Results are presented for scintillation and ionisation thresholds, electroluminescence yield and excitation efficiency. Since the response of a pure xenon detector for X-ray energies lower than 2 keV is known to deteriorate due to electron loss to the entrance window, this study was undertaken to examine the possibility of improving the energy resolution of a gas proportional scintillation counter, using this type of mixture
