Abstract :
Spectrum limitations are often a deterrent for swift growth of cellular radio systems. Therefore, different technologies have been explored to enhance the Radio Frequency (RF) capacity, and to meet the increasing demand in subscriber capacity. Some of the recent technologies that are currently under investigation include Dynamic Channel Allocation, Mobile Diversity, Mobile Power Control, and Discontinuous Transmission (DTX). In this paper, the authors analyze and quantify the performance improvement as well as the capacity increases which result from implementing DTX in a cellular system. The performance criterion is chosen to be the outage probability. Closed form expressions are derived for outage probabilities of co-channel interference in the presence of Nakagami fading with and without DTX. Moreover, expressions are derived for average outage probabilities for different voice activity factors
