Abstract :
Short Fibre Reinforced Polypropylene (FRP) electrets exhibit much higher Thermally Stimulated Depolarization Current (TSDC) as compared to isotropic polypropylene. Uniaxial stretched polypropylene (SPP) on the other hand, shows lower polarization in comparison to the isotropic sheet and a shift towards higher temperatures in two TSDC peaks observed between 60 and 150°C. This is despite the observation that stretched polypropylene reinforces the structure and improves the toughness and strength in the direction of stretching. The low TSDC in SPP is attributed to reduced segmental mobility. This interpretation is analyzed further and it is suggested that further work on measurement of charge distribution profiles is essential in SPP and FRP to understand the polarization mechanism and take up development of devices such as electret filters
