The paper discussed the functions, the concept and the basic principles of Reverse Engineering (RE), and the major segments during the process of automobile body modeling were explored and experienced combining with the key technologies of Reverse Engineering. On the basis of automobile plasticine model, by 3D scanning, the modeling data were obtained. Then such tasks as the point cloud data processing, surface reconstruction, re-design were finished respectively, and finally the automobile body modeling design was completed. The application of this technique provided the new ideas to develop new car product rapidly and effectively, and was a strong guidance to the new product designing and developing.
