The uneven distribution of friction factor along the pipeline introduces an error in leak location resulted from the model based leak location method. A new approach called equivalent transformation of pipe length has been proposed to compensate the error. The approach map the uneven distribution of the friction factor into the pipe length variation and the compensation can be made without increasing the complexity of leak location algorithm. Two methods, estimation through measurements and estimation through calculation, have been developed to estimate the distribution of friction factor according to instrument installation along the pipeline. The approach proposed has been verified through experiments conducted on a real gas pipeline. The results of the experiments showed that the compensation approach improved the accuracy of leak localization with both of the friction factor estimations. The methods proposed are important complements to the leak location method based on model.
