  • Abstract
The author presents vital strategies for business managers for the 90s and suggests initial directions for implementing them. These strategies are deemed vital because failure to promptly and properly address the related issues will prevent the business unit from surviving the decade. The strategies are initially grouped as external and internal for purposes of discussion. The external elements are markets, customers, regulations, technology, competition, product liabilities, capital, and networking. The internal strategies are discussed with reference to vision, continual improvement, business improvement ideas, concurrent engineering, employees, future systems, flexibility, cost, preferred employer, employee benefits, business planning, and forecasting. It is concluded that it is imperative that the business unit or organization effectively implements its action plans for all the strategies
