Abstract
REMs are a natural step towards the creation of a single European electricity market. There are seven ERI launched by ERGEG, covering also the regional markets established before. This paper brings the focus to the 8th REM covering the SEE countries launched by the European Commission. Dealing with congestion management and capacity allocation in particular, is used as an example in this paper to show that the progress made in the development of the SEE REM is great despite the short time of its existence, and even sometimes higher than the progress in some of the other ERI. Given the EU membership perspective of the SEE countries as well as the overlap between the members of the 8th REM and some members of the ERI, the work of both initiatives shall be organized in a manner that uses the best practices and experience gained in each of them.
