Abstract :
In this work, we present a novel patch antenna for a passive microwave tagging system operating in the ISM band (2.4-2.48 GHz). The tagging system is based on surface acoustic wave (SAW) technology, where the reading distance of several meters with low radiated power of the interrogating unit is combined with a passive transponder. the SAW tag reflects the interrogating signal with different time delays, thus no electronic circuitry is needed. The time and phase difference between the ´echoes´ uniquely characterizes a code, Such a read only tag consists of just an antenna connected directly to the SAW chip. During the identification process the tag antenna serves two purposes: as receiving antenna for the reader signal and as transmitting antenna for the reflected SAW-transponder signal.
