Abstract :
Since the advent of native XML databases, several native XML database systems have been developed both in industry and in academia. These products can be categorized into two groups: commercial and open source products. The present study compares the performance of four open source native XML database products from the point of view of handling the four basic database operations. In particular, this paper examines Berkeley DB XML, Xindice, eXist, and dbXML. Each product is deployed and evaluated using the relevant benchmark techniques. A number of interesting insights are gained from these experiments and a summary of the strengths and weaknesses of each of these products is presented
