Abstract
A novel family of field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) that features synchronous I/Os with guaranteed clock-to-pad timing and fast internal logic is described. The performance of the ACT3 family opens new applications for FPGAs. A brief description of the device architecture is given, followed by a discussion of some applications that take advantage of device performance. The applications addressed by the family include such products as computers, LAN controllers, and bus controllers.<>
