Abstract
In this paper, we analyze the performance of the binary exponential backoff algorithm in the broadband wireless access (BWA) network. Especially, we focus on the initial backoff window for improving the performance of the BWA medium access control (MAC) protocol. To analyze the optimal initial backoff window size, we define the cost function using the system performance and calculate the optimal initial backoff window according to the number of users and the traffic characteristics
