Abstract
Presents a technical description of the GEM compiler technology, a multilanguage retargetable compiler system. The authors describe a number of optimization techniques that GEM compilers use to exploit the features of Alpha AXP systems. They discuss techniques used to optimize pipelining, multiple instruction issue, and memory references. Branch optimization examples are presented.<>
