Abstract
The author discusses system models for network automation including telecontrol, SCADA, LAN and WAN. A combined distribution and customer automation model is discussed. The author then comments on the differences between the main telecontrol protocols IEC 870-5 and IEC 870-6, and compares features of IEC 870-5 with the IEC 1334 series, which may be seen as a “rival” to it. It also considers which LAN standard is likely to emerge from the IEC. The author indicates the National, European and International standards bodies known to be active in the various areas impinging on automation communications. Telephone/hard wire, radio, power line/distribution line carrier transmission, and satellite communications systems are discussed
