Requirements for hierarchical storage management at AT&T Bell Laboratories

The author describes the computing environment and requirements for a hierarchical storage management (HSM) product within the AT&T Bell Laboratories. He first describes the data storage services provided within AT&T Bell Laboratories. Next, he describes the application environment of some of the major UTS and workstation customers.
