Abstract :
With the dimensional precision that can be achieved in the processing of silicon substrates, it should be possible to extend the operational functions of the electro-optic circuit either on one piece of silicon or with a larger assembly of MCMs linked by fibres mounted in v-grooves on each of the subassemblies to form an extended MCM. The signals between substrates would then be at high frequency obviating the need to reconvert the optical signal to electrical with the conversion loss involved and so take advantage of the low cross-talk inherent between optical fibres
